Each trigram is three lines: Heaven ☰ (all yang, creative), Earth ☷ (all yin, receptive), Thunder ☳ (rising, initiating), Water ☵ (danger, depth), Mountain ☶ (stillness, boundaries), Wind ☴ (penetrating, gentle), Fire ☲ (clarity, attachment), Lake ☱ (joy, exchange). Memorize the eight and the 64 hexagrams become combinations, not chaos.
Ask three questions: Is the energy rising or falling? Is it moving toward me or away? Is it solid or permeable? Heaven is rising and solid; Earth is still and receptive; Thunder is explosive rise; Lake is pleasure with a boundary. In a market context, Thunder asks 'is a breakout starting?', Mountain asks 'is this a ceiling or a floor?', Water asks 'how deep is this correction?'.
The practical payoff: you stop asking 'will it go up or down' and start asking 'what kind of situation is this'. That reframe alone improves journaling, position sizing, and patience. Card learners internalize the eight fastest — one card per trigram, then one card per combination, then the elements between them.
